Master´s Thesis Portal Data Science

In general, topics for Master’s theses are assigned by FAU university lecturers. In some special cases, however, interesting research questions for a potential Master’s thesis may result from work in companies.

Since Master’s theses must be mentored and reviewed by FAU university lecturers, you have the best chance of writing your master’s thesis in cooperation with an industry partner if you first contact a professor and find out what existing contacts they have to companies already.

The reverse approach of looking for a company independently and then trying to find a fitting academic mentor is rarely successful, as there is no guarantee that an outside topic can be mentored at FAU. However, in order to be able to process and respond to such requests, the „Master’s Thesis Portal“ has been set up. You can submit a specific request using the form below. Your request will then first be checked to see whether the proposed topic is potentially suitable for a Master’s thesis and whether a mentor can be provided by FAU. Only if both of these criteria can be met concrete talks with the company in question can be initiated in the next step.

Please provide the following information when making your request via StudOn-Course „Master Data Science“. After entering the course please join the „Master´s Thesis Data Science“ group. By filling in the input mask, you´re joining the group.

You will be guided through the input mask. Once you have entered all the details, you must upload the required files via the data collection displayed. Only then is your request complete!

  • Surname, first name, matriculation number, e-mail address for contact purposes
  • Specialization (major subject) in your Data Science degree program
  • Current semester
  • ECTS points achieved so far
  • Intended starting date for the Master’s thesis
  • Topic/title of the thesis
  • Details about the company:
    • Name of the company, address, details of the specialist department if applicable
    • Specific contact person in the company: Surname, first name, contact details (e-mail address)

Please also submit the following documents with your request:

  • Current transcript of records
  • Letter of motivation (approx. 1 page) stating why you are interested in the topic in question
  • Synopsis on the topic (approx. 1-2 pages), in which the links between the topic and the company are recognizable and which states what the scientific contribution in the field of data science is
